C-Section Scar Tightness & Sensitivity

A C-section scar can sometimes feel tight, sensitive or uncomfortable during everyday movement. Appropriate assessment and individualised rehabilitation can help you understand your symptoms and work towards comfortable movement as healing progresses.

01 / Understanding Your Scar

Healing can involve more than the skin.

A C-section involves several layers of tissue. As the incision heals, scar tissue forms and gradually remodels. Some women notice tightness, altered sensation, tenderness or pulling around the scar.

These sensations may become noticeable when standing upright, stretching, changing position or returning to normal activities. However, not every scar symptom is caused by restricted scar mobility.

Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve assessment to distinguish expected healing from problems that require medical attention.

02 / Common Symptoms

What you may notice.

  • Tightness or pulling around the incision
  • Tenderness when clothing touches the scar
  • Reduced or altered skin sensation
  • Discomfort when stretching or changing position
  • Sensitivity during everyday activities
  • Difficulty becoming comfortable with movement

03 / Clinical Assessment

Understand the cause before treating it.

Assessment begins with your surgical history, healing progress, symptom pattern and the activities that cause discomfort.

When appropriate, a physiotherapist may assess surrounding tissue mobility, skin sensitivity, abdominal function, posture and comfortable movement.

The incision must be fully healed before scar mobilisation or massage is considered. New redness, warmth, discharge, wound opening or increasing pain requires medical review rather than scar treatment.

04 / Rehabilitation Approach

Gentle care, guided by healing.

01 Movement and Comfort

Guidance on comfortable posture, transfers, walking and daily movements according to your stage of recovery.

02 Scar Desensitisation

Once the incision is completely healed, graded touch and other appropriate desensitisation strategies may help manage sensitivity.

03 Scar Mobility

Gentle scar mobilisation may be considered after healing and clinical assessment. Technique and pressure should be appropriate to the individual.

04 Abdominal Rehabilitation

Gradual breathing, abdominal coordination and functional strengthening exercises when suitable for your recovery stage.

05 Progress Review

Your programme can be adjusted according to symptom response, tissue healing and functional improvement.

05 / When to Seek Medical Care

Know when symptoms need attention.

Contact your maternity team promptly if the incision becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, starts discharging fluid or opens.

Fever, severe or worsening abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding or feeling acutely unwell requires urgent medical assessment.

Chest pain, sudden breathlessness or a painful, swollen calf requires emergency medical assessment. Do not delay care to try physiotherapy.

06 / Frequently Asked Questions

Questions, answered.

Is scar tightness normal after a C-section?

Some tightness, altered sensation and tenderness can occur during healing. Severe, worsening or persistent symptoms should be assessed to rule out other causes.

When can I start scar massage?

Only after the incision is fully closed and healed, without scabs, open areas or signs of infection. Ask your maternity team or physiotherapist when it is appropriate for your individual recovery.

Can physiotherapy improve scar mobility?

Selected scar mobilisation techniques may help some women with sensitivity or restricted tissue movement. Results vary, and treatment should be guided by assessment.

Why is the skin around my scar numb?

Small skin nerves may be affected during surgery, leading to temporary or sometimes persistent altered sensation. Seek clinical assessment if symptoms worsen or concern you.

Can scar treatment remove the scar completely?

No treatment can guarantee complete scar removal. Appropriate care may help manage sensitivity, mobility or comfort, but the scar's appearance and response vary between individuals.
